Lyric Magazine - Review

Throughout the album, Speace mixes poetry and crystal-clear memories of her father’s stories. While the stories are deeply personal and particular, Speace manages to elevate them in a way that will touch anyone who’s ever experienced loss. And while the material isn’t especially light or upbeat, there’s a strong undercurrent of hope throughout the record.

Speace’s voice takes center stage in the album. While the Orphan Brigade were fully present as cowriters, they allow her singing to be up front. Their instrumental work highlights her deeply emotive and plaintive vocals. For anyone willing to go an emotional journey, There Used to Be Horses Here is a terrific record.
